Bollywood power couple Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan have filed a high-profile lawsuit in the Delhi High Court against YouTube and its parent company, Google, demanding ₹4 crore (approximately $450,000) in damages over the circulation of “egregious” and manipulated AI-generated deepfake videos.
The legal action, which follows a recent court injunction protecting the couple’s personality rights, marks one of the most significant celebrity challenges to AI misuse in India.
Demand for Permanent Injunction and AI Safeguards
The 1,500-page court filings, submitted on September 6, seek a permanent injunction to prohibit YouTube from hosting or monetizing any content that misuses the actors’ likeness, voices, or names. Crucially, the petition goes further, urging the court to direct Google to implement safeguards that prevent such manipulated content from being used to train other Artificial Intelligence models.
The couple argues that allowing deepfakes to remain online risks their exploitation for AI training, which has the “potential to multiply the instances of infringing use” and further spread misleading content.
“Egregious” Content Cited
The lawsuit highlights numerous instances of manipulated content, including videos digitally altering Abhishek Bachchan to depict him kissing an actress, and other clips showing Aishwarya Rai in fictional, romantic scenarios with her former co-star, Salman Khan, while Abhishek is portrayed as reacting with anger.
One YouTube channel cited in the petition, “AI Bollywood Ishq,” reportedly features over 259 such videos and has collectively amassed over 16.5 million views, demonstrating the scale of the infringement.
Court Orders Takedowns; Next Hearing in January 2026
The Delhi High Court has already issued orders for the takedown of 518 specific links and posts identified by the actors, acknowledging the financial harm and damage to the couple’s dignity.
Google’s legal counsel has been directed to submit written responses to the allegations. The matter is currently scheduled for its next hearing on January 15, 2026.
Until then, an existing injunction continues to protect Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s personality rights, restricting the unauthorized commercial use of her identity, including through AI manipulation.
The case has ignited a national conversation on “personality rights” in the digital age, underscoring the legal complexity celebrities face as generative AI technology rapidly advances.
