Heavy Rains Lash Hyderabad, Musi River Overflows; CM Revanth Reddy Issues High Alert

Hyderabad, September 27:
Heavy rains continued to batter Hyderabad on Friday night, causing the Musi River to overflow near the Chaderghat Bridge after the release of water from the Himayat Sagar reservoir. The sudden surge has triggered flooding in several low-lying areas, forcing road closures and massive traffic disruptions across the city.

The release of water from the Himayat Sagar gates, combined with incessant rainfall, worsened the situation in central parts of the city. Roads near Chaderghat, Moosarambagh, and Malakpet witnessed severe waterlogging, leaving commuters stranded in long traffic jams. Several underpasses were also shut down as a precautionary measure, while motorists were advised to take alternate routes.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy immediately convened an emergency meeting with top officials and directed all departments to remain on high alert. He instructed the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Disaster Response Force (DRF), and police teams to continuously monitor flood-prone areas. The CM also stressed that people living in vulnerable zones must be shifted to safer locations without delay. “There should be zero compromise on public safety, and all agencies must work in coordination to prevent casualties,” he said.

Emergency relief teams have been deployed to assist residents in inundated neighborhoods. Temporary shelters are being set up to accommodate those displaced by the rising waters. Authorities have urged citizens to avoid riverbanks, stay indoors during heavy downpours, and refrain from traveling on water-logged roads unless absolutely necessary.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of more heavy rainfall in Hyderabad over the next 48 hours. Officials fear that additional reservoir discharges could lead to further flooding if the downpour continues. With the city already witnessing widespread disruption, the administration has assured citizens that rescue and relief operations will remain active around the clock until the situation stabilizes.
