New Delhi, October 27, 2025:
Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai has officially recommended Justice Surya Kant to be appointed as the next Chief Justice of India. The recommendation, made through a formal letter to the Union Government, sets the stage for a smooth transition at the helm of the country’s judiciary.
Justice Gavai, whose tenure is nearing completion, followed the long-standing tradition where the outgoing Chief Justice names the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court as their successor. The government will now take the next procedural steps to issue the official appointment notification after the President’s approval.
Justice Surya Kant, currently one of the senior-most judges in the Supreme Court, has earned widespread respect for his insightful judgments and deep understanding of constitutional principles. Over the years, he has played a significant role in shaping key legal interpretations related to governance, individual rights, and public accountability.
Before joining the Supreme Court, Justice Kant served as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court and earlier as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Known for his composed demeanor and fairness, he is admired across the legal fraternity for his commitment to justice and clarity in legal reasoning.
If appointed, Justice Surya Kant will become the 51st Chief Justice of India, succeeding Justice Gavai. His elevation is expected to continue the judiciary’s focus on strengthening institutional independence and delivering accessible justice to citizens.
The official announcement from the government is expected soon, marking another significant chapter in India’s judicial leadership.
