PM Modi Pitches for ‘Swadeshi’ Goods, Says GST Reforms Will Accelerate India’s Growth Story

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has once again called upon citizens to embrace swadeshi products, stressing that India’s journey toward becoming a self-reliant nation depends heavily on strengthening local industries. Speaking at a recent event, Modi said that every rupee spent on Indian goods directly supports farmers, artisans, small businesses, and entrepreneurs, and this collective support is crucial for building a stronger economy. He reminded people that his vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat is not about isolation from the world but about building internal capacity so that India can showcase its strengths globally while securing its economic independence.

Modi also highlighted the role of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in shaping India’s growth story. Since its introduction in 2017, GST has unified multiple indirect taxes under one system, reducing complexities for businesses and creating a more transparent tax environment. The Prime Minister pointed out that the reforms have particularly benefited small and medium enterprises by removing unnecessary barriers, improving compliance, and encouraging investment across different sectors. According to him, the new GST reforms have emerged as a game-changer for entrepreneurs who can now expand without facing the hurdles of a fragmented tax structure.

Linking the concept of swadeshi with GST-driven growth, Modi said that the country’s economic progress will accelerate if citizens consciously prefer Indian-made products. Choosing local goods, he explained, is not just an act of patriotism but also a practical way to create jobs, strengthen domestic industries, reduce dependency on imports, and ensure long-term sustainability. From handloom weavers and handicraft makers to manufacturers and modern startups, every Indian producer stands to benefit when people opt for indigenous products instead of imported alternatives. Recent reports have shown that under the GST 2.0 rate cuts, items ranging from consumer electronics to automobiles are becoming more affordable, which in turn boosts domestic demand.

Economic experts have also welcomed Modi’s remarks, noting that the combined effect of swadeshi promotion and GST reforms could create a multiplier impact on India’s GDP. With nearly 60 percent of the Indian economy driven by domestic consumption, shifting consumer behavior toward local goods can reduce the trade deficit and provide a massive boost to small businesses. Analysts believe that GST has already positioned India as a more competitive market for global investors, and coupling that with the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat vision could further accelerate growth. Reuters recently reported that India’s consumption tax cuts are designed to stimulate demand and encourage more spending on locally produced goods.

Modi’s call comes at a time when global markets are facing uncertainty due to inflation, geopolitical tensions, and supply chain disruptions. India, however, is being seen as a resilient and promising economy, and the government’s push for self-reliance along with tax reforms is aimed at securing long-term stability. With continued emphasis on digital compliance, easier filing norms, and reforms to make GST even more business-friendly, the Prime Minister expressed confidence that India is on track to become a $5 trillion economy in the coming years. His renewed push for swadeshi and belief in GST reforms reflect not just a short-term agenda but a long-term strategy to safeguard and accelerate India’s growth story.
