In a major relief for festive revelers, the Supreme Court of India has allowed the sale and bursting of green firecrackers in Delhi-NCR this Diwali — but with strict rules to curb pollution and ensure public safety.
The apex court made it clear that only eco-friendly firecrackers, which produce less smoke and noise, will be permitted. These green variants are designed to reduce harmful emissions by nearly 30%, offering a cleaner way to celebrate the festival of lights.
The bench emphasized that this decision is not a blanket approval for all kinds of fireworks. Local authorities and police have been directed to strictly monitor sales and take immediate action against those selling or bursting banned firecrackers.
⚖️ What the Supreme Court Said
The court stated that while cultural traditions must be respected, they cannot come at the cost of public health. “We are not against celebrations,” the bench noted, “but they must be responsible and environmentally conscious.”
The judges also warned that violating the order would lead to seizure of stock and legal action against violators.
🌱 What Are Green Firecrackers?
Green firecrackers are a newer, cleaner version of traditional fireworks developed by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). They don’t use harmful chemicals like barium and produce significantly less particulate matter and noise. These are marked with a distinct green logo and QR code for verification.
🏙️ Delhi-NCR’s Pollution Challenge
The decision comes amid rising concerns over air quality in Delhi-NCR, which typically deteriorates sharply post-Diwali due to smoke from fireworks, stubble burning, and vehicular emissions. Authorities are hoping that this move will help balance festive joy with environmental responsibility.
🎆 What Citizens Should Remember
People can only buy and burst licensed green firecrackers during permitted hours, usually from 8 PM to 10 PM on Diwali night. The Supreme Court also urged citizens to celebrate in a way that spreads light, not pollution.
This year, as families across Delhi-NCR prepare for Diwali, the message from the top court is clear — celebrate responsibly, breathe easy, and keep the spirit of Diwali alive without harming the environment.
