In a significant development in the investigation into the death of renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, his cousin, Assam Police Deputy Superintendent Sandipan Garg, has been arrested. The arrest, made by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Assam Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), brings the total number of individuals detained in connection with the case to five.
Zubeen Garg tragically passed away on September 19, 2025, while swimming in the sea during a yacht outing in Singapore. He had traveled to the city-state to participate in the 4th North East India Festival, organized by Shyamkanu Mahanta. Sandipan Garg, who accompanied his cousin on this trip, was present during the incident.
Following his arrest, Sandipan Garg was remanded to seven days of police custody. Authorities have indicated that further investigations are ongoing, and additional individuals may be summoned as the case progresses.
The arrest of a close relative has added a layer of complexity to the case, intensifying public interest and media scrutiny. The SIT continues to examine all aspects of the incident to ascertain the circumstances leading to Zubeen Garg’s untimely death.
