Mumbai:
Following the recent change in India’s ODI leadership, young star Shubman Gill has shared a heartfelt message for Rohit Sharma, praising the veteran opener’s captaincy and influence on the team. Gill’s comments came shortly after it was announced that he would be taking over the reins of India’s ODI side, marking the beginning of a new chapter for Indian cricket.
Speaking to reporters, Gill expressed deep respect for Rohit, calling him “a captain who led with calmness, clarity, and selflessness.” He added that Rohit’s presence in the dressing room had been instrumental in shaping many young players’ careers — including his own.
“Rohit bhai has always been more than just a captain to me,” Gill said. “He’s someone who trusted me when I was new to the side. The way he backs his players, gives them space, and reads the game — that’s something every young cricketer learns from.”
The leadership transition, though natural in the team’s long-term planning, marks the end of an era where Rohit Sharma led India with remarkable consistency and calm under pressure. Under his captaincy, India achieved several memorable wins, including series victories at home and abroad.
Gill, who has been one of India’s most promising batting talents in recent years, acknowledged that stepping into Rohit’s shoes is “a massive responsibility” but said he’s ready to take the challenge head-on.
“Leading India is a dream for any cricketer. Rohit bhai’s legacy as captain is huge, and my focus will be to build on that foundation. I’ll always seek his guidance because his experience is priceless,” he said.
Rohit, known for his composure and sharp tactical acumen, is expected to continue playing as a senior batter and mentor in the ODI setup — a move that many believe will help Gill transition smoothly into the leadership role.
As Indian cricket enters a new phase, the camaraderie between the outgoing and incoming captains reflects a healthy team culture — one built on mutual respect, mentorship, and a shared goal of taking Indian cricket to even greater heights.
